If you have factions just go get a Black Moa. They already come LVL20 and are elder pets. I think elder pets are better because the are balanced. I think hearty pets do not do enough damage. Dire pets die to easy as i don't usually play straight beast master. You can find the Black Moa by the House of Zu Heltzer during a quest. The quest is called something about a Beak or something. Then after that quest you can get them at anytime. I have one for each of my ranger heroes for pack hunting.

Pets are pretty much the same other than different types of physical damage so just pick one you like. The bear does a special attack which doesn't do anything extra but slows down its attack rate. For pure DPS it is then a little worse, but if you have a skill that is triggered when a skill is used then it could be of use.

Guildwiki will list them all.

Im thinking if you want a "status-symbol" pet, then get a pheonix, because you can death level it to dire. pets dont get hit much so them having low health isnt usually a problem.
